I just noticed an interesting behaviour. When I scroll the map to the edge, suddenly the image becomes sharper and some grey features are visible. These grey features are in the png files, but are for some reason not visible until you reach the edge of the map.

Perhaps scaling the screen 200% (map zoom in desktop settings) is the cause? Or perhaps some png alpha channel effect?

Nothing of that Smile
Just try version with reduced color depth (8bpp instead 24bpp).

Cool!
Cool

But does that not indicate that it is something to do with the png alpha channel?

Nope, but if you wish Smile
Next sample - day/night map versions. Shows visible grid (both 8bpp).

Looks good.

For me the question remains: why does Trekbuddy display the map differently (more correctly with greater detail) when you reach the map edges?

Reason can be easy to explain - in times of simple phones, with low resources, no one used 24bpp picts for map tiles Smile
Adding different options for map tiles handling in app (ie rescaling, showing map or background for part, etc), to be working on different platforms, is neverending story Smile So maybe for one 24bpp works, but in some other part not, ie due in phone transformations. App just calls, phone works or not Wink
But main questions remains the same - is it worth to have nice 24bpp colors tiles and more big files for handling ? Smile
Or small files due kind of used coding and big size pictures when used by phone ?

Thanks for the explanation. To me it is still a little surprising that the display "quality" can be so different...

In this case the tiles are served in this format. The simplest is of course to use it as is. Adding bpp transformation to the process adds complexity. Is it worth the effort? Perhaps... In some situations (older phones, big atlases), most probably.

Conversion of TB map bpp or graphical effects is complex task ? Smile
I used for it very simple TB mapping tool, listed on forum, it creates tmi files too Wink

BTW, checking again handling of 24bpp is rather complex task in app, probably some main parts of app should be changed. Not fast step.

Seems that this tool (and the others on that blog) are not available anymore for download...

Are there any updated links somewhere else?
