Here's the source code (Java) that handles maps downloading from both GoogleMaps and VirtualEarth (since for some places MS has better data). It is not 100% complete, so if there's anybody willing to continue working on it, please go ahead. It is a kind of GoogleHackPureJava successor...

It can download road, aerial or hybrid maps from VirtualEarth or from Google in any size / every zoom from 1 to 17 for GOOGLE and 1 to 19 for VE (GOOGLE zoom is shifted for 1 value so that it matches those from VE).

To be done:

- with 8bpp output images, the quality is realy poor (java is doing the conversion from 24bpp to 8bpp but it's dithering method is not that good - each tile has it's own color table and by stiching them together - nothing useful comes out. Some outside program or foreign java library should be used for the conversion)

- file caching should be better implemented

Under which licence is the sourcecode? I want to extend it for BikeAtor. Can I reditribute it under the terms of GPL?

I compiled the sources and tried just to run it with the Main class , but it did not work. (It seems in the source as the golden gate in US is the target) I got the following message over and over again:

Img urls : GE_a_z2_ttqtsqrqtqsssqqssqt.jpeg=http://kh.google.com/kh?n=404&v=14&t=tqtsqrqtqsssqqssqt

Don't you die on me now!! I give you one more chance....

java.io.FileNotFoundException: http://kh.google.com/kh?n=404&v=14&t=tqtsqrqtqsssqqssqt

Anybody make sense of it?

UPDATE:
I found out. The google url has changed.

Hi you all,

I had a quick look at this download software as every other software is lacking from the google URL change and did not work. Thanks to oldman for te new URLs.

I replaced the old URL by the new one and got it working - well not yet testet much, but the example works.

For new users: The coordinates are (by now) hardcoded in the main method of the Main.java file. You have to edit them, compile the project and of course run it. Compiling works with 'javac bs/Main.java' and running with 'java bs/Main'

I attach the changed version, which is just a minor change to kruch's version at the beginning. Maybe we can find a better solution for 'releasing' than attaching to posts.

i have a problem with this sourcecode, which i cant figure out at the moment... i think it's that the classes like zoom, which are in other files aren't recognised. (are these classes? to be honest, i haven't seen this yet...) thank you

Thanks, but this seems to be a guide for Linux only. How to compile under Windows? Confused

Java compiling is the same under windows. Just install the JDK (which set the PATH correct) and then run javac in a terminal (run: cmd)
