Hello,

i have a sollution for those who would like to do geocaching offline with TrekBuddy. Personally I think its the very best option.

First of all you need a GPX waypoint file with all the geocaches. There are three options:

  • first (and recommanded) is getting a Premium member on the geocaching.com website.
  • or you can use tool called geotoad (link also from wiki) - its a bit unintuitive, but i like it better - you choose type=coords, distance=x miles and longtitude+latitude
  • or you can use graphical tool Cacheprinter mentioned by Čelda (see bellow)

Now the file is probably prepared for deploying to TB folder, but I was very annoyed, that it doesnt show type of the cache in TB-map, so I made simple script which prefixes the name with type, it adds logs at the end of LongDesc and finally it repaires broken XML files. As a bonus, the loading time is 50% shorter.

Project page for GeoGPXcleaner (online conversion, script download)

Hope it helps!

For CZECH users: doporučuji svůj tutoriál na geocaching v mobilu.

There is even a better application solving all you described in one !!

Cacheprinter (Skrýšotlač) Cool

http://cacheprinter.bubbles.sk/

- Cacheprinter is free !
- Cacheprinter is platform-independent (Java) !
- You don't need a premium membersip to use Cacheprinter !
- If you set the output formats properly you can export desired geocaches directly into GPX for Trekbuddy !!

The output format can be set in "Output - Export to GPX - Advanced Settings". I use this:
"Use custom name:" %info%-%name% [%wpt%] by %author%
"Description:" (empty - Trekbuddy does not display this field.)
"Comment:" %hint%

An example of generated part of GPX for a cache:
Code:
<wpt lat="49.1234567" lon="16.7654321">
<name>TR22-Alexandrovka/Alexander lookout [GCABCD] by 2opice</name>
<cmt>CZ: Pod drevenym "sedatkem"ENG: Under the wooden "chair"</cmt>
<desc/>
<sym>Geocache</sym>
<type>Geocache</type>
</wpt>

(Remark: I modified the sample data by hand not to reveal the real cache data. But the export format is exact.)

Thanks for posting an alternative, i have already tried this application, but i found very difficult the downloading of the cache files. At present I use the geotoad tool, which can download all the caches returned by a search, not only several (clicked) pages. (Or am i wrong?)

Actually I havent really found a way to get output like you have posted up, and all the same the geotoad+geogpxcleaner suits me best, because I can run it on my server over ssh. Smile But I agree that Cacheprinter could be better for majority of people, i will link it in my czech tutorial. Thanks Smile

In the Cacheprinter you can
- find a cache by its waypoint name
- find all caches of desired type and/or size and/or within desired distance from a desired point (GPS coordinates or another cache)
- add caches or erase them from the lists got by the methods above by hand
- export the resulting cachelist in the format TB can directly read

However, unlike the premium membership Cacheprinter cannot find caches within desired distance from a route Sad That's the only feature I lack ...

Hello celda,
Thats all pretty cool, but i was wondering about a possibility to download details of all caches returned by one search. I mean all the pages of the result at once. In that case, i would prefer the cacheprinter tool. Smile

we just create a pocket querie or download individual gpx files and combine using gps bable we like to use the cache name not the gc code so this works fine the gpx files can also be used in garmin for navigation to the cache sites it would be interesting to hear what images you all use for caching we use in tb google map 15 zoom for navigation 19 zoom sat images for pin pointing and os maps in 4 zoom levels for footpaths etc the new sort by distance is a god send for caching

What do you mean by "details" or "all the pages" ?
I give you an example what is possible in the cacheprinter :
1) In one query I CAN get ID ("human" name, wpt) of all traditional caches bigger than micro I have not found yet within the distance of 20 km from given GPS coordinates.
2) Then I can (but don't have to) exclude some of them from of the list.
3) Then I initiate in one step the download of data for all the caches from the list.
And finally - when the download is finished
4) I can save in one step all the caches into one GPX in the format I showed you above. The GPX is directly readable in TB.

What else would you like ?
