Hello,
i tried this software and believe on a great future and potential.
And there were other great software projects that died, just because the "owners" of the code did not open the project to become open source.
So what is your (forum member or just TB-user) opinion about this?
thanks |

Every app should be opensource , but such a situation seems to be just impossible. IMO if Kruch find it neccesary he will release source code. _________________ http://ludwik.ovh.org |

I have no experience about pros/cons when releasing the code.
I would like that this project never finishes; so if Kruch gets tired and the source code is available I suposse it's good. Anyway I would understand Kruch doesn't release it (although I love free software and try to use it as much as I can).

If I will not be able to continue, I'll make it opensource. I have some obligations and I cannot either quit or publish sources now. Should they change, opensourcing is serious alternative to current development model.
Meanwhile, I guarantee there will always be free closed-source version
By the way, how about voting on AUDI forums to give A5 for free? |

Best development model is *one* person is coordinating it.
And ... I wish you as much as possible time to make TB better and better !

Sure, I can vote ! But in case of open source the documentation of A5 I will never buy this model !

Hi Kruch,
thanks for such a great application. I am just curious, what is preventing you from publishing the source code. Can there be anything done about it? I am sure many people would love to see what is inside. |

Not only to see what's inside, but also to fix problems the users find and implement new features from wish list faster.
I find this software cool, but I stick with it just because I don't have time to find something else (what's opensource) or to implement what I need from scratch. So I hope the sources will become open so I can fix problems I have before I lost my patience. |

If it were open source I would be very interested on contributing for a faster wish-list as far as my j2me skills allow it.
As me, I'm sure many other developers around the world would be very interested on contributing the project. Also the difusion that sourceforge provides will be very useful to provide fame and fortune to TrekBuddy. |

Hello Kruch,
what kind of obligations are your problem?
I hope there is no data collecting ala Google&Co and backdoors etc involved. Could you please give us a short comment on that.
On the other hand, while appreciating OpenSource, your A5 argument is quite valid and understandable.... ....thanks for the closed-source-version ... dont want to be ungrateful...! |

billy6,
you are mixing up two things!
No one said, that kruch should give up maintainance and leadership for the mainstream-Trekbuddy! ...and if there would be another competing version in the future ...probably no problem, but it would be a question of the applicable licence (-- a decision of kruch, GPL would be very very generous, but no precondition for open source) ... so via the right choice of licence kruch could forbid the publication of forks of trekbuddy as well as commercial use while making the code public (....ok, there might be black sheep...).
There is only the wish to be able to see behind the code and to be (theoretically) able to do fixes and improvements on your own. The pro would be that kruch gets help from the community as well. No one said that there should be write access to kruchs source...
On the other hand my question "what kind of obligations are your problem? I hope there is no data collecting ala Google&Co and backdoors etc involved. Could you please give us a short comment on that.
" remains valid and I hope for clarification. |

@tbuser1
What is indeed your problem ?
App is freeware and you can help in bugfixing it, as community do now.
I didn't saw you in that, wishes only ... |

Not really a problem but only uncertainty raised by kruchs wording.

if I find bugs, I [can&do] help - if you look at my posts you'll find that has happened with regard to maps/atlasses. But on the other hand I was near scaling atlas-bitmaps to get a zoom-feature - my only chance without source-code and not good as a solution.... Granted: I dont have the time to do fultime testing and bug hunting...

I think you are aware of the difference between white and black box tests... both have merits, but....
Again /as said/ , thanks to kruch for that great application. Open source could be a way for him to get help as well... ...but of course it is his decision both ways. |
