Not any time soon... this is rather big task. Only if there is ready-to-use engine it would then be worth looking at.

I do not know how PNG-JPG images are rendered in TB, but maybe using JSR 226 (SVG) on J2ME devices would make it an smaller task.

In other words, perhaps we could use SVG images, instead of JPG or PNG. Thus, keeping everything the same, but for the image display in canvas. That would be a giant step, not very difficult to implement.

In future you could add features to TB when SVG maps are loaded, processing vector map info from the XML content. But for the moment, SVG display would rock.

I'm also interested in having vector maps in Trekbuddy, because my picture based maps grow and grow ... thus I checked OSM Wiki for j2ME frameworks (https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Frameworks) and found following entries:

J2memap non commercial J2ME Provider independent maps with overlays
MGMapsLib GPL J2ME display, marker Java widget

Another tool I regularily use on my tablet is named GDAK (regarding offline maps it says @ (http://gdak.wolojoli.nl/map-view:

"If you want to use offline maps you have to follow some steps:

First you have to download maps. You can do this on the Mapsforge website @ http://download.mapsforge.org/maps/, but there are also other resources like openandromaps @ http://www.openandromaps.org/en/."
). Seems for me that this a compatible and dificult to implement."
The download sites mentioned seem to have more development details...

Update: just saw that lower links wouldn't work - fixed it

Many sea charts are available as vector maps. It would save a lot of space if we can use these instead of the tiled raster format.

Any chance of getting this functionality?
