I would like:
- to be able to stop the tracklog without killing GPS communication
- to be able to start a tracklog AFTER I started GPS communication, without previously having to kill GPS communication

Seems to me like a natural thing. Why is this not possible?

+1. I've come to the same conclusion, start/stop of tracklog should be from within the program, not from start/stop GPS connection/program.

I would love the same feature! Plenty of time just after starting GPS it has only 4-5 satellites or even 3 (awful 2D).

So I always start GPS sooner than really start riding my bike and then have to manually remove few first points from GPS track

Those were the main reasons, GPS communication should be unrelated to logging.

Log stays empty when there are no satellites or no signal, and I would sometimes like to see my position and speed without logging. Why be so exclusive either you HAVE to start log OR see your position without starting the log, BUT if you want to log, you have to restart your GPS communication? Seems silly to me. Smile

And yes, as a workaround at the moment by default I log every track, and I really don't like those first few minutes of hunting for satellites... Neutral

Users with big cards just don't think about it. What kind of logs you use - gpx or nmea ?
I agree that starting gps is critical for logs content.
Maybe a "start log delay" setting can solve some kind of problems for different devices ?

-by hand
-ask
-always ?
I'm too lazy to think about logging start/stop Smile

There is an option for logging: never, ask, always.

Yes, there will be no changes to existing settings. But with active tracking, user will either see Start tracklog or Stop tracklog in Waypoints commands.
So even with "never", user will be able to start tracklog anytime. Or stop it, no matter how it was started - automatically or by hand.
