I am completely new to this and wondered if someone could help me.

I wanted to calculate the distance to various waypoints and display them in a CMS screen. Is it possible in HECL either to change the currently selected waypoint to obtain the waypoint distance or alternatively get the coordinates of a named waypoint and calculate within HECL the distance from the current position?

Thanks

KenL

Judging by the overwhelming response, I guess that it’s not possible to do this! Smile
So I’m going to put it on the wish list.

not actually ...

the waypoint ae nnot accessible with the actual version using hecl ...

so .... but if it was .. it would be very easy to compute a pythagore using utm coords .

Thanks for the reply.

Not sure exactly what you mean. Are you saying that co-ordinates are available with other versions of TB?

Anyway unless they are available with the HECL version then it's not much help. Do you know if there is any way of reading the actual waypoint files via HELC. If so maybe theres a way of extracting the co-ordinates directly from the file.

I did look briefly at doing a function to get the distance between 2 sets of co-ordinates, but that uses the 'ACOS' function, which doesn't seem to work in TB.

I repeat no way actually to read any waypoint with hecl.

using hecl you can get the position in meter on a flat projection .. so the distance computation is really easy !

do you known pythagore ? Wink

I don't even know what a pythagore is !!

I came across a formula in Excel: =ACOS( SIN(lat1)*SIN(lat2)+COS(lat1)*COS(lat2)*COS(lon2-lon1) ) *6371
which computes the distance in km and I guess you could convert this to HECL except that the ACOS function doesn't seem to work.

Thanks again for the prompt reply vincent.

pythagore ?
whaouoooooooohhh A² = B²+ C² !!!????

the best is to use utm coord and use triangle pythagore ...

why acos ?
