Decided to try this morning going to work.
Left phone in non-airplane mode, ie, all radios on.
Started TB and started tracklog.
About a halfhour inside the house.
Drove to work, 20 minutes. Noticed that tracklog would at first be invisible but after a minute it would suddenly appear on desktop.
Got to work and did my normal work for the next couple hours, check TB status frequently. Used phone for various other functions.
Then, bang, no TB running and phone had rebooted.
Checked the recorded tracklog and the last entry was 2 hours 55 minutes from the start. Tracklog was not closed properly, no closing </gpx>, etc.

I'm willing to do more experimenting. Next step?

Went out again this weekend and got similar results.
About a mile into the hike I noticed that tracking had stopped so I restarted TB.
Then at a couple miles the phone had rebooted. No running apps in the apps list.
Geez, is no one else having this problem? Perhaps I'm having collisions with other apps that try to check in, or something?
I've deleted my twicca app and replaced it with Tweetdeck. We will see how that goes next time.

Happy Hiking.

Another hike and another crash.
Put it into airplane mode.
This time I closed all recently used apps.
Started TB and tracklog.
Next time out, I will try to "kill" all running apps.

Surely, it must be a conflict with other apps, right?
Is anybody out there successfully running Trekbuddy under Android I.C.S. ?

OK, Trekbuddy works well on the Sensation.
Not so good on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
Went out again this past weekend and my phone rebooted 2 times during my 3 hour hike.
Prior to starting TB I put it into airplane mode, dismissed all recent apps and "killed" all other apps that appeared to be unnecessary.
I'm at a loss for what to try next.
Back up a version or 2 of Trekbuddy and re-install?
Perhaps billy06 would be willing to share the settings that he is using?
billy06, what version of ICS are you on? Mine is 4.0.2.
Do you also start a tracklog when using TB?

I make my own maps using USGS maps for starters, calibrate with
Oziexplorer, cut with TBcutter and make a tarred atlas with jtbtar.
My finished product seems to track perfectly and when I patch together my aborted tracklogs they match up really well on the map.

I already sold my old dependable HTC Incredible. Don't tell me to break out my antique Blackberry Bold!

Any recommendations on what to try next?

android 4.0.3, sense 3.6 SW 3.32.206.12
tracklog ask, normally yes, i do normally use a bluetooth gps, i will test this evening for a few hours using internal gps and report back.
like Ranger said alogcat will show whats going on before the reboots, also no need to kill apps android is perfectly capable of handling them
UPDATE after 3 hours of tracking all was fine no crashes

Went out for a hike today and fired up the alogcat app and TB as usual. The route in was only a couple miles and the damn phone rebooted twice. Checked the file system but no log file was captured. Is there a special setting to log before reboot?
Decided to try the "My Tracks" app and it worked OK, but it is no Trekbuddy.
On the route out I tried TB again and to my surprise no reboots. I was able to get a tracklog and everything. Even took a picture while TB was running.

I just can't figure out what's going on here.

Perhaps when Verizon pushes v4.0.4 to this phone "soon" all will be fixed?

Dare I say that version 4.0.4 fixed it for me?
Verizon did indeed push the latest OS to my phone.
Just got back from a hiking holiday and used Trekbuddy everyday and had NO reboots. Tried airplane mode on and off, was in and out of cell range many times and had spotty GPS signal at various times too.

I'm happy again, Smile

I'm happy to report that Trekbuddy is playing nicely with this phone.
Now can I move on to a couple other issues?

1.I have a similar issue as others with the navigation track not updating in a regular manner. I notice that sometimes the track will just stop updating during a hike. I'll fiddle with the menu, drag the map a little or perhaps switch to another app; and sometimes it takes 5 minutes or so before the track updates. Weird.

2. I noticed with this phone that sometimes the captured track was quite a ways off from the true path that I walked. I was blaming a poor GPS radio inside the phone. But I've changed my mind . Did a little Google research and there was a suggestion to turn off Google's Location Services in the settings. This worked for me, now tracks are very accurate.

Thanks for a great program.

Version: 1.2.4
Device: Vodafone smart mini
Android: 4.1.1
Trouble is that this device doesn't have a hardware menu button (it has only "back", "home" and "tasks")

I tried to create a waypoint - after entering coordinates, the only way was push back button. Then i selected new file, entered name, but when i push back button, TB goes to background. NO WAY to confirm file name. also no way to edit imported waypoint, no way to navigate to any waypoint. Menu button is missing...

I use TB for years and it's great.
I had it on Nokia, Siemens, Motorola Defy, right now I have it on Haier W718 (Android 4.2.2).
And that's the problem Smile
I don't know why, but even in TB running in foreground, with logging, this phone sleeps gps when screen turns off!

I checked that this is not TB specific issue Sad
Did anyone have similar problem and solved it somehow? Could application do something to deal with it?

So far I found one silly workaround for it: turn on backlight permanently and lock keyboard.
