SE phones Installation Guide (based on k750i) - valid for TB 0.9.55 and later
1. Download TrekBuddy jar and jad files to PC (pls don't use other phones versions)
2. Connect phone to PC and copy two files to memory stick, ie E:\MSSEMC\Media files\other\tb folder. You can create it if not present.
Create DataDir folders structure in ie E:\MSSEMC\Media files\other\:
- maps for maps storage
- resources for user interface customization
- sounds for route point sound
- tracks-nmea for nmea logs
- tracks-gpx for gpx logs
- ui-profiles for CMS screen themes
- wpts for waypoints
This structure must be created by hand in selected DataDir location to have TB working !!!
Get CMS theme for your phone from forum Themes section and copy it unpacked to ui-profiles folder.
3. Disconnect phone from PC.
4. Open phone file manager and go to Other folder, you will see tb folder with app files.
5. Install using jad file. You can use Info option to be sure that file you install have jad extension. Choose Application folder as destination.
6. When manager ask to start app choose NO.
7 Go to Applications folder, select Trekbuddy and use More option.
9. In Permission menu choose Read User Data and set Never Ask, Write User Data and set Never Ask and if you would Local Connection to Never Ask.
(If you don't have such options you not installed from jad or java root certificate is not present.
No way to use signed TB without Thawte Premium certificate).
10. Start TB, make settings as described in Users Manual and enjoy.
Warning. For k750i DataDir should be set inTB settings as file:///E:/MSSEMC/Media%20files/other/. Remember, phone file system is case sensitive.

|
|
As in post title, some map tips.
Map sources
1. Bought raster maps (in typical graphic file format, like jpeg, png, tiff etc). Don't buy map without calibration info.
2. Scanned paper maps suitable for GPS
3. Online services maps, like GM or local
4. Other bitmap sources
Map selection and preparation
1. Raster maps pictures should be choosed according to the phone screen resolution (mostly (150-200dpi, to have similar map scale on screen). Sometimes it means "by hand" rescaling of map pictures in graphic editor to have good effect. Online maps are adopted to computers screen resolution, so in this case choosing right zoom is all.
2. Map calibration
For TB use is good to prefer WGS84 map pictures with Lat/Lon grids, as native in GPS system.
But not only, if you have map pictures produced with other datums/projections, they can be used in TB too.
If you got ready map picture with proper calibration file, nothing more is to do at this point.
Maps for TB can be calibrated in PC programs like OziExplorer Trial or Map Calibrator (both free for calibration).
First read user manual or help how to use application. OziExplorer is number one, Map Calibrator don't save all necessary calibration info to the file in some cases.
If you already have map with calibration file and you rescaled picture, calibration must be updated. It is easy, you need move calibration points to correct positions on screen and save file. If not, you should produce calibration file yourself.
Simple calibration steps:
- load map picture for calibration
- set datum/projection
- set four calibration points in map corners (or near corners for TM grid calibration)
- save calibration file
For online maps the best way is to use automatic grabber/calibrator (if you find them).
3. Last step - map conversion, color reduction and cutting.
One simple tool for all this steps - TB Cutter (see tools section on forum).
Just choose source map and destination files paths, set tile size and start conversion.
If you prefer, you can use for this task TBMapper, it shows maps and calibration points before cutting.
Finally map should be copied to phone or memory stick.

Some friends asked me how I prepared GPS working postcard maps I sent them for TB.
If you know some place interesting to enjoy, you can just share wpt gpx file with friends.
It is a little limited way, says nothing what you can find around such place.
So I decided to prepare a small maps with pictures showing more.
(You can find a sample attached below and see it in forum Screenshoot section; Potsdam datum needed).
To create TB postcard map you will need:
1. Map of place (scaled 1:25 000 or 1:10 000 and calibrated; I used no copyright old map)
2. Some (own) pictures taken on place.
3. File with waypoints you recorded.
Preparing map as background is simple. Just copy map picture file, open it in graphic editor and draw rectangle around the place (postcard size). Place resized camera pictures inside rectangle.
Open map with prepared picture in OziE and using drawn rectangle find calibration corners coordinates.
Cut picture to postcard size and recalibrate it using copy of old .map file.
Next with TBMapper or TBCutter produce postcard map.
Final step is to include ready map and wpts files in archive file. Have a fun.
If you would share something with TrekBuddy users, just do it

Simply tutorial "How to use custom datums in TrekBuddy" for experienced users.
If you got calibrated map, there are few points you should check before map can be used in TB.
1. Check how map was calibrated.
Open calibration .map file content, ie using text editor or OziE. Check map datum and projection to be sure that they are supported in TB.
Code: |
OziExplorer Map Data File Version 2.2
Domazlice.png
Domazlice.png
1 ,Map Code,
Pulkovo 1942 CZE,WGS 84, 0.0000, 0.0000,WGS 84
.......
Map Projection,Transverse Mercator,PolyCal,No,AutoCalOnly,No,BSBUseWPX,No
Point01,xy, 230, 226,in, deg, 49, 40,N, 12, 30,E, grid, , , ,N
......
Projection Setup, 0.000000000, 15.000000000, 1.000000000, 3500000.00, 0.00,,,,,
......

If you find your map datum not supported by default, don't worry, you can probably define custom datum in TB.
2. HowTo include custom datum in TB.
To define custom datum for TB, you need know datum name, ellipsoid name and 3 transformation parameters dx,dy,dz.
TrekBuddy uses 3 points Molodensky type transformation, similar as OziExplorer. So it is easy to get all these parameters from OziE. Just open View menu and choose Datum List, a long table will open. Search for your map datum in the list. If you find correct line, you probably have all needed parameters. If not, map is directly unusable in TrekBuddy.
Samples of TBs custom datums
Code: |
Datum-2: PND1925{Bessel 1841,633,33,456}=map:Borowa Gora
Datum-3: S-42 Czech{Krassovsky 1940,26,-121,-78}=map:Pulkovo 1942 CZE
Datum-4: S-JTSK{Bessel 1841,589,-76,-480}=map:S-JTSK CZE
Datum-5: India and Nepal{Everest (1956),295,736,257}=map:India and Nepal
Datum-6: AGD 84{Australian National,-134,-48,149}=map:Australian Geodetic 1984
Datum-7: Potsdam{Bessel 1841,606,23,413}=map:Potsdam Rauenberg DHDN
Datum-8: Europe1950{International 1924,-87,-98,-121}=map:European 1950
|
Lines with new datums should be included in jad file used for TB installation. More info can be found:

New folders structure in TB0955
One of the new features in TB 0955 is folders structure necessary to save logs and waypoints.
The reason of change is to have files saved by TB ordered, ie wpts in wpts directory, nmea logs in tracks-nmea, gpx logs in tracks-gpx etc.
So instead of "tracklogs" directory known from previous versions, in 955 root folder is named "DataDir".
For SE phones, ie k750i, DataDir can be on memory stick, like this:
E:\MSSEMC\Media files\other\
to have files access from k750i file manager.
(inTB settings you should write this dir as file:///E:/MSSEMC/Media%20files/other/)
This way is possible to send wpts and logs via BT to PC or other phones.
Other models can require a little bit different settings. Pls remember, phone file system can use case sensitive names.
The easiest way to check that folders data structure works properly is to save a waypoint file to wpts directory and next try to see it in wpts store.

A long awaited computer mode is available in TrekBuddy from 955 version.
To use it, just copy CMS profile from forum Themes section to phone ui-profiles folder.
Profile consists of xml definition file and fonts, should be selected according to phone screen size.
Without such profile CMS is just empty screen. Use #key to switch between map/HPS/CMS modes.

No way to use signed TB without Thawte Premium certificate). The same permissions should be done for Write User Data and if you would Local Connections
|
Yes, there is a way
I have a SE K750 unbranded and unlocked, but I don't have Thawte Premium Certificate for Java
But for some SE, it is possible dissable all Java permissions. You should apply a patch *.vkd for your exact version mobile, i.e.: K750_r1ca021_java_restrictions.vkp
There is more info and links here. At your own risk.
For me work perfect, and Treckbuddy never ask again.

No reason to use signed version in patched phone Although works too.
For some users it is easier to ask operator to have certificate installed.

Yes, if phone is patched, signed or unsigned java works equal.
But, ask to my operator to have certificate? They are not going to understand to me. I think they will never send me Thawte Premium certificate...

Yes, if you decided to patch phone, you know consequences (not acceptable for some users, as you can read on this forum).
BTW, you can find old info how to patch k750i on TB forum too.

you will not lose any configuration.
I have seen patches only for SE K750 and W800.

User Interface customization.
Starting from TB 0.956, it is possible to have some non standard elements of GUI, like crosshair, direction arrows or waypoint symbol.
It can be usefull for phones with large screen, ie 320x240.
Changing elements is easy. Just create in DataDir new folder named resources and copy selected elements from Themes forum section to this location. Enjoy.
