Hello Kruch:

First of all, congratulations for your development.

I would like to contribute with this great app.

I have a suggestion to include one more screen (using the “#” key) for car/bike navigation assistance (see attached image):
- Suppose that using a selected Waypoint file, you can extract the positions, names and descriptions of each waypoint.
- Comparing the position of the active and the next waypoints, you can detect if a turn right, left or ahead is needed and place the pictogram of related movement.
- The waypoint description needs a rolling text algorithm to show long texts.
- You can use the same target of the map to show the compass and waypoint directions

What you think about ?

Thanks

Yes this - navigation screen (this one is very nice!!), sounds - is planned.
Although I prefer voice navigation in the car and while biking (I have PDA in the pocket and I'm really starting to hate taking it out whenever being uncertain where to turn...), such screen just looks so cool! Cool

Hello guys:

I´ve found a way to use CMS themes to implement the Navigation Assistance feature.

Explanation of this solution:
As the waypoint altitude {wpt-alt} is not useful for car/bike navigation, I'm using this attribute to carry the direction information on the CMS theme.

The CMS theme will show the direction icon indexed by the {wpt-alt} value and the distances.
This {wpt-alt} comes from <ele>X</ele> element from the waypoint file (GPX format).

I'm using the tool GM2GPX (http://www.elsewhere.org/journal/gmaptogpx/) to retrieve the route points from google maps. You can use the full list and filter it inside of my tool. The important thing is to have a route in GPX format, to be converted into a new GPX file with the directions.

I developed a simple tool in VB6 (see attached) to prepare the GPX file, using the <ele>X</ele> element to carry the direction number.
The generated GPX file should be used as waypoint route for trekbuddy.

Steps to setup it:
1) Put the CMS theme (see attached) into the cell phone trekbuddy´s directory "ui-profiles". This should be done only at the first time.
2) You need to have a GPX file with the route, or use the GM2GPX tool to retrieve it.
3) Use my tool (see attached) to filter, calculate and generate the GPX file with the route directions.
4) Put this GPX file into the cell phone trekbuddy´s directory "wpts".
5) Open trekbuddy
6) Configure the "Wpt proximity" parameter into "Settings/Navigation" to 30m.
7) Open the generated waypoint file using "1" key
8) Start the "RouteAlong" feature
9) Goto CMS screen using the "#" key.
10) Start the GPS

Knew limitations:
- This is a pre-defined off-line assistance. If you get the wrong directions, it is not able to recalculate and inform you the right direction.
- As the directions were calculated between the "last" and the "next" waypoints of the list, if you are coming from another path during the route assistance, the informed direction could not be correct.
- When you have multiple directions (like in a roundabout), is impossible determine which direction to take. I have to find a way to extract this information from google maps interface.
- When the waypoint is reached, the next waypoint direction icon is displayed automatically, without check if you have turned the right direction.

Kruch:
If we incorporate the direction algorithm into the trekbuddy, we can implement a lot of cool features:
- allow the direction correction during the route assistance, calculating the direction based on the current position and the next waypoint. The actual implementation is based only on last and next waypoints.
- allow the direction turn detection, before to jump to next waypoint.
- the use of the external tool is not necessary anymore
- put the waypoint description on the screen
- possibility to put the direction icon together with the map
- possibility to create a sound guidance, based on the direction and distance information.
- possibility to create a voice guidance

If we incorporate a geocode database into the trekbuddy, containing all streets connections and directions information, we can implement a lot of new features:
- waypoints search directly on the cell phone
- locations search directly on the cell phone
- run-time route generation directly on the cell phone

Thanks.

Asi pridam do CMS samostatnou zalozku.
