Changed proposal.
Key "0" third longpress ? And next "0" shortpress to change "map scale or 7/9" role from easy zoom to zoom?
And different icons colour fo show easy zoom or zoom active ?

Yes, let's not forget classic phones; also there no way to handle multitouch in MIDP, it is rather obsolete framework Mad

But: we could use long FIRE for phone with classic keypad (works fine), and have some simple gestures for touchphones, like: to switch layers use simple slide gesture starting from zoom icon towards the other one... but it reminds listing in a book so it doesn't feel natural, but it would "free up" zoom spot long press for bitmap zoom-in/back out...

There are two problems to solve.
First is to have map readable at all from different sources - for such think rather Desktop setting with initial magnification factor is better think (to have map rescaled to 100% of screen ppi or near from natural map picture ppi).
Zooming map itself is just different think, ie to have some predefined factors like 75%, 125%, 150% etc, depending on kind of zooming possible (if any is).
So another desktop setting - use available map zooms first in layer and next switch layer in repeated model (means use both) is an usage option too. This way keys 7/9 will work almost the same way, only depending on desktop settings.
Layer selection from list is still usable when many of them are in atlas for fast jump to another scale or map type.
Fire short push is now rather used to synchronize gps position, can be a bit confusing if instead of that map scale will jump ...

Because this zoom by most users will be a permanent setting depending at the individual display resolution, the presetting for it should placed in the settings menue under display settings

personally for me zoom will not be a permanent setting, i have created maps suitable for the displays of the devics we use as i expect most people have, what zoom will be usefull for in our case will be to see which side of a ditch a wpt is etc

1. may be, "permanent" was the wrong word for what imean. I thought more at a predefined resolution at start of Trekbuddy.
2. a presetting does not exclude the posibility of other functionality, e.g a long press of a key but the handling should stay simple.
3. This feature is for maps, that are almost unusable with smartphones, so there is no need to show it first in a not usable resolution and zoom it then out.
4. Ranger, you have very nice ideas, but i would be very glad to have a simple zoom by 2 ... and its realy hard enough for kruch, to implement that. Wink

Simple resizing map by 2 doesn't give it natural scale for different phones. Relation between display ppi & map ppi should be more precise and settable as magnification factor. And user should know this factor for own phone ...
Limit just comes from different systems posibilities, not Kruch Smile

Here is a semi-stable build for early adopters Smile

- zoom in / back by long press FIRE (= center of the touchscreen), with short vibration feedback.
- no persistent option yet
- in atlas, x2 zoom is set per each map

Android and Blackberry has built-in support for scaling (native code, maybe even hw-accelerated), so performance should be at least acceptable; on other platforms God knows... I guess only Symbian phones have enough memory Smile... in Nokia 701 (Belle OS) performance seems quite good.

Zoom works map by map in layer, should be ?
When map is switched to another due gps positon change or moving, zoom "is lost" for next map. Probably flag to zoom in or not should be set for all maps in layer one time and removed for all too. Or even for all used maps in atlas ?

it works really nice!
the only thing is that if you long press FIRE, it also centers at current position on the map (like short press FIRE). I think it shouldn't combine those functions, but it's not a big deal.
