Hello

I am very new in this forum, and also with trekbuddy and my new nokia5800.

First i want to say thank you to the builders of trekbuddy and additional features!!!!!!!!!

I am a very enthusiastic paragliding pilot, and i want to use my nokia as a backup-gps.
I use also a garmin etrex-vista.

I try now to make a cms for the noka 5800 for paragliders.
Paragliders need a very simple cms with following contains:

-time
-altitude
-vertical speed (positiv or negativ) in meters/second
-gliding ratio (=groundspeed divided by vertical speed)
-groundspeed (very very important!)
- needed ratio to next waypoint
- direction to next waypoint (a little compass-needle)
-distance to next waypoint
-distance to last waypoint
-dinstance to first (start) waypoint

usefull but not very important:

-values of built-in accelerometer
-oters? (do other pilots have any needs?)

cms should have a very good readability in sunlight!

What i am also looking for, is a simple map, on which i can see som towns/villages an airspaces (i need switzerland an europe).
Airspaces should also show the important informations such as:

-radio frequencies
-tma or ctr (kind of airspace)
-max. or min. hight (geographical infos)

there are some maps here:

http://www.dfc-saar.de/

or for google-earth:

http://www.skyfool.de/2009/04/01/neue-luftraume-fur-2009/

Are here in this forum other pilots with similar requirements?

Does somebody have some good ideas for me?

Thanks

Hula

I am a paraglider pilot, too.
I am looking for something similar, and I found a good starting point in the latest 9-view CMS from MaleSmurf. I am thinking of modyfying it to fit our requirements, but I still have to study how to use the very new scripts.
I am using a Nokia N95 (240x320) at the moment, so probably if the resolution of your display is different you will have to adaapt it. Anyway, I will tell you all as soon as I have some time to do it.
Quote:

-altitude
-vertical speed (positiv or negativ) in meters/second

I have made some tests and it seems these values are very unprecise and fluctuating, both with internal receiver and with an external Sirf III antenna. They cannot replace an altivariometer, despite the fact that you have to set the right altitude at every new flight.
Quote:

-gliding ratio (=groundspeed divided by vertical speed)

My first intention is to use scripts to write this simple formula, however I believe I will not be able to get good results until I filter some way (Kalman? Median?) the noisy values of the speed, however introducing some delay (3-4 seconds?) in the visualization. I have no experience in programming filters so some real tests would require some time...and I believe the results would not be so encouraging, so I am still not sure...
Quote:

- needed ratio to next waypoint

This is a more precise and less fluctuating value (in calm air and far from the waypoint). I have it in another software, and I use it to be sure I will land where I want: when I am directed towards the lannding field, I watch this value, and -if it increases- I am sure I will get to the target (in non descending air), else I will have to search for another grass field. It happened.
Quote:

- direction to next waypoint (a little compass-needle)
-distance to next waypoint

Look at the latest MaleSmurf 's CMS. He did a great job!
Quote:

-distance to last waypoint
-dinstance to first (start) waypoint

Why do you need them? Kruch, are these variables computable?
I wonder also if it is possible to create a route of some (not all) waypoints in a file, and how it is possible to step from one waypoint to the previous/next (I hope is automatic if reached), if the first is not reached.
Quote:

-oters? (do other pilots have any needs?)

I believe that foreseen altitude at destination would be the best value to compute, if horizontal and vertical speed were precise enough.
Probably, this would help you a lot if waypoints are pilons of a competition (never done it, however). What do you think?
Quote:

cms should have a very good readability in sunlight!

This is Achiles' heel of colour displays in modern phones. Never found any good enough. Have you? The best is to have in white on black, like in the CMS I mentioned.
Consider however that if you want all of this information on one view, you will get lost. Better to have a few legible values, in these small displays, that you can quickly have a glance at, while piloting. If you have other GPS, what are the values that you can show in a single view?
Quote:

What i am also looking for, is a simple map, on which i can see som towns/villages an airspaces (i need switzerland an europe).

Tell me if you find any.
The nicest I found is google terrain, grabbed using one of the tools available on this site. It gives you the altitude of the terrain and the names of towns. Hardly readable in direct sunlight anyway, on my phones.
Bye,
G

Hi,

I have transformed simple CMS by marc (from this thread http://www.trekbuddy.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=693&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15 ). I have SonyEricsson P1i (320x240 px screen) with HGE-100 GPS handsfree.

My CMS has these areas:
sat/fix
speed
course
altitude
vario (vertical speed)
time
duration (of moving)
distance from waypoint (personally I use it as distance from takeoff)
and 2 new features implemented with the help of HECL:
graphic vario (similar to Flytec 4005 etc.)
glide ratio
My CMS is very simple, no special graphic, only values, small symbols and units, placed on the screen in the way I found usefull. I am XC pilot, no competitions, therefore there is no need to have "glide to waypoint" or "course to waypoint"Smile. But I agree they are important in competition flying.

According to my experience, "variometer" based on GPS is suprisingly precise - this flight http://www.xcontest.org/cesko/prelety/detail:scorpi/21.3.2009/12:24 was done only with the help of trekbuddy with my CMS (I forgot all the instruments inc. vario and Garmin GPS at home:) and I think it is very good backup for thermalling - the only disadvantage is that you must look on the screen continually....but it depends on the GPS unit - my personal experience with SE P1i / HGE-100 are very good.

Visibility on the sun - very good in daily mode with white background and black foreground. This flight http://www.xcontest.org/cesko/prelety/detail:scorpi/31.3.2009/11:42 I tried Trekbuddy with my CMS together with Garmin Legend and Flytec 4005 - and I must say that:
1) detection of thermals (up/down) was very similar to Flytec
2) height difference against Garmin Legend was no more than 5 meters within 3 hrs flight.
3) at the end of the flight the battery was down (mainly because of constant backlight I guess - of course, it was very cold over 2000 m).

Glide ratio is not yet ready, seems buggy in this moment, but the idea is simple - it is measured as value "integrated" by 10 seconds.

Now I must wait for lat/lon implementation into HECL, I have some ideas how to extend it for XC flying...Smile

Hi pilots.
I tried to create a first version of the CMS I wanted, but with no full success: I realized there was no wpt information available in the scripts, so I could not add glide ratio to waypoint.
Download the CMS from Malesmurf, backup, and replace the files in the zip.
I have big fonts, and only what I need:
-time and sat view
-ground speed and vertical speed
-compass
-current altitude and current glide ratio
-compass to WPT
-WPT altitude and WPT glide ratio (now always 0.0 Sad)
-WPT ground distance, arrow to WPT, and WPT name

No filters are implemented, so real time information is always displayed, but fluctuations may be big (with my internal receiver).

Let me know if it can be of any help to you too.

Hy thomas, hy gdpno69

very nice, an your work works! Thank you!
Now, this is a atlas, so it should be zooable? But you only put one layer in it, so I can't zoom, is that right?

On my 5800 with big screen it looks quiet comfortable!

I need "distance to start-point" for i know how many kilometers ife already done.

I know that these simple phone-gps values are all very unprecise. I use them only as packup, an it ist a nice to have. I mean this also for gliding-ratio and gliding-ratio to waypoint

My real interessts ar in the airspace-maps!

cheers

Hi,

I am working successfully on my own cms. A very simple one.
It would be fine, to see both altitudes, those in m and those in feet.
For flying i use m, for talking to airports, I need feet.

Does anybody has a solution?

Hi Hual or Hula Wink
when you set trekbuddy to metric following line should give feets:

<area x="325" y="70" w="200" h="50" font="60px" align="left">
<script>print [* $cms::alt 3.28084]</script>
</area>

if you want to talk to Nasa, following line should give the Flightlevel:

<area x="325" y="70" w="200" h="50" font="60px" align="left">
<script>print [* $cms::alt 0.0328084]</script>
</area>

not testet.

Thomas.

Hi thomas,

I have tested it now, it doesn't work.
I modified the comand by this {}, because i thougt you forgot it, but it wasn't the fault.
See here:

<area x="325" y="146" w="200" h="50" font="48px" align="left">
<script>print [* $cms::{alt} 0.0328084]</script>
</area>

The fault must be somewhere else.........

but thank you!

Hi,

did anybody test my cms for nokia 5800xm?

Thomas helped me to convert meters into feet. It doesn't work on my 5800, but on his phone it works. Has anybody a solution for the problem.
Thomas sent me a little test-cms. Feet are only set at "0", meters are working.........
