Am currently evaluating J2ME GPS apps that I can find for my 6230i. Trekbuddy was the first that I got working.

Am used to using a Tracky with my PPC (www.trackthisout.com) which is particularly flexible and easy in the map configuaration and calibration area.
Trekbuddy seems quite complicated in this respect but otherwise delighted to have found it.

This is also first experience with SIRFIII. Whilst sensitivity is great, I have to say that despite 6+ satellites, accuracy is often not nearly as good as my old Navman PIN570. The High Precision Screen shows this very dramatically. Does anyone have any tips for optimising accuracy?

Finally, in Waypoints menu, there is option for Record Current and Enter Custom.
Q 1. Do they both record the current position as accurately as each other?
Q 2. Having recorded Current. Can I set this as destination or if I want to set a posn as destination, do I have to choose Enter Custom?

Thanks Kruhc for a good piece of work,

James

Hello and welcome Smile

What do you mean by "HPS shows this very dramatically"? Is the current position better than the one calculated in HPS, or both are just worse than that in Navman?

A1) "Record current" records last-known position from GPS, while "Enter custom" let's you enter any (initial value is taken from crosshair position). For the latter, there's a limit of numbers after decimal point that may be entered, which may decrease accuracy of the wpt.

I think I may have forgotten to mention in the release notes that lat/lon may be entered in DD MM.mm but also in DD MM SS.ss format..

A2) Only the wpt entered via "Enter custom" may be used for navigation as of now

Better wpt management is one of the main goals for upcoming release (which is delayed a bit, unfortunately Crying or Very sad ).

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Firstly what I meant by dramatically is that it seemed to show that the GPS position I thought I was recording as a destination waypoint was some distance off even though I had not moved. This was partly caused by my misunderstanding that the Enter custom function defaults were not taken from the last recorded GPS position but from the crosshairs on the map navigation screen. Just a suggestion but could you add an option to the wpt menu "Current posn as WPT" ?

Finally, If switch between the two HPSs then the distance to destination is different. I would expect them to read the same? Am I misunderstand how these screens work? Am I correct in thinking that the distance to the circle is the distance displayed on the screen that changes when pressing '1' and '3'.

Rgds,

James

In the next version, actual GPS positions recorded via "Record current" will be available for "navigation" too.

The "green" short-term HPS calculates average position out of last 20 positions taken from GPS, the "lightblue" long-term one calculates avg out of last 40 avg positions from the "green" screen; therefore the 2 positions may differ.
