Hello folks,

for an upcoming trip I'm currently working on creating a topographical map of the southern part of Norway.

Norway government offers basically good topographical map data for free on a basically rather crappy web-application:

www.geonorge.no - hit 'Launch MapViewer'

Also, they do offer a WMS service:
http://wms.geonorge.no/skwms1/wms.topo (topographical data)
http://wms.geonorge.no/skwms1/wms.rutenett (UTM grids)

Those two generate a good topographical map with the UTM grids I want to have.

Now I'm facing some problems: I cannot get any application to work with those wms-servers except the above mentioned rather crappy web-application.

My intent is to get jpg/png files out of that wms servers, calibrate them with UTM grids and use them in trekbuddy. I'm already failing on getting the material into jpg/png format though.

The only possibility I figured out so far is to take screenshots from the web application, however that would take years and years to complete: a 1:50.000 screenshot only covers something like 12:7km in reality...

Another problem is the web-application does not reduces the size of details, but it reduces details to such an extent that a 1:50.000 map in the web-application is close to useless.

Here's my question:
Do you know/have any application that does work with the mentioned WMS servers? If so, which and what settings are required?

Please bear with me if I'm asking stupid questions - I'm quite new to those things, but I'm trying my best. ;)

Thanks in advance,
JonasL

I haven't found a perfect solution, but a work-around that does the job for me. The geonorge wms servers seem to deny connections from my computers, only the java-application seems to work for me.
So, I had no choice but use it.

I've run across a program called MapGrabber http://panshin-programming.blogspot.com/2007/06/map-grabber.html.
It creates big .jpg/png/tiff files of adjustable size, taking the data out of any application that allows scrolling by mouse movement, such as the above mentioned web-application of geonorge.

You can possibly also use http://users.skynet.be/hofinger/MapCapt.html, however it limits the size of the maps until you make a donation. I haven't tried it.

It also supports GPS calibration, however I prefer to manually calibrate the maps with GlobalMapper.

Then, use TBCutter and that's it.

Not a perfect solution, but it works quite fine for smaller trekking maps.

To get the picture of the map at geonorge.no you only need Firefox. Open the map you want at geonorge.no and use Tools - Page Info - Media . Then you can download the jpg file. It should be possible to automate the process.

Anybody seen sea maps for Norway on the net ?

The Norwegian government has excellent maps of Norway (both topographical and sea). It's relatively simple to download the tiles, however, I don't know how to calibrate them.
